Planorbidae, Lymnaeidae and Physidae of Argentina (Mollusca: Basommatophora)

In the course of several trips to Argentina I had the opportunity of collecting specimens of Acrorbis petricola Odhner,1937, Biomphalaria orbignyi Paraense, 1975, B. peregrina (Orbigny, 1835), B. tenagophila (Orbigny, 1835) Lymnaea viatrix Orbigny, 1835, Antillorbis nordestensis (Lucena, 1954), B. intermedia (Paraense & Deslandes, 1962), B. oligoza Paraense, 1974, B. straminea (Dunker, 1848), Drepanotrema anatinum (Orbigny, 1835), D. cimex (Moricand, 1837), D. depressissimum (Moricand, 1837), D. heloicum (Orbigny, 1835), D. kermatoides (Orbigny, 1835), D. lucidum (Pfeiffer, 1839), L. columella Say, 1817, Physa acuta Draparnaud, 1805, and P. marmorata Guilding, 1828.

This paper is based on material collected by the author during several trips to Argentina, one of which, from March 13 to May 18, 1973, was supported by the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas of that country and the Conselho Nacional de Pesquisas of Brazil as executive agencies of the Brazil-Argentina Agreement on Scientific Cooperation.

The specimens were killed and preserved as described elsewhere (Paraense 2003). Voucher specimens are deposited in the Malacological Collection of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute.

Genus Acrorbis Odhner, 1937

Acrorbis petricola Odhner, 1937 - Salto Encantado waterfall from Arroyo Cuñapirú, at Aristóbulo Del Valle (Misiones). Morphology in Paraense and Deslandes (1959, 1960), Paraense (1986a), and Scott (1960).

Genus Antillorbis Harry & Hubendick, 1964

Antillorbis nordestensis (Lucena, 1954) - Pond near Cuatro Bocas (Entre Ríos); ditch at Rosas, Arroyo Videla between Azul and Chillar (Buenos Aires); Lago Mascardi (Río Negro). Morphology in Paraense and Deslandes (1958b) and Paraense (1975a).

This species was originally described from Belgrano and Tigre (Argentina) as Planorbis pfeifferi by Strobel (1874), a primary homonym of the African Planorbis pfeifferi Krauss, 1848.

Genus Biomphalaria Preston, 1910

Biomphalaria intermedia (Paraense & Deslandes, 1962) - Arroyo San Juan at Candelaria, ditch at Parque Nacional del Iguazú near Puerto Iguazú, Laguna Capibary and Laguna Curuzú at Itapúa, Laguna Madanto at Santo Pipó (Misiones). Morphology in Paraense and Deslandes (1962).

Biomphalaria oligoza Paraense, 1974 - Río Santa Lucía at San Roque (Corrientes); pond near Dos Ríos (Córdoba). Morphology in Paraense (1974).

Biomphalaria orbignyi Paraense, 1975 - Ditch near airport at Corrientes (Corrientes); marshes at Paraná (type locality) and Bajada Grande (Entre Ríos); Río Salado near Santo Tomé, pond at Rosario, pond near Pavón, Santa Fe (Santa Fe); pond near Vuelta de Obligado, marsh at Campana, laguna del Monte near San Miguel del Monte, ditch at Las Flores (Buenos Aires); ditch at Mendoza (Mendoza); ponds near Chancani (Córdoba); ponds at Castro Barros and Chamical (La Rioja); small pond near Termas de Río Hondo (Santiago del Estero); shallow pond near El Bracho, marsh near Dique El Cadillal (Tucumán); Laguna Rodeo near Volcán (Jujuy); pond at Embarcación, pond at Puesto La Mina between Hickmann and Dragones; pond at Los Blancos, pond between Los Blancos and Capitán Juan Page (Salta); ponds at Ingeniero Guillermo Juárez, Los Chiriguanos, Estanislao del Campo (Formosa). Biomphalaria peregrina (Orbigny, 1835) - Brook at Paso de los Libres, brook Capiquice near Bonpland, bog at Labougle, pond at Goya (Corrientes); marsh 10 km southward from San Salvador, grassy marsh near Raíces Oeste, Río Paraná at Paraná (Entre Ríos); ditch at San Carlos (Santa Fe); Arroyo Las Hermanas near San Nicolás de los Arroyos, ditch at Tronco Talar near San Fernando, ditch at Quilmes, brook Carnaval at Villa Elisa, marsh at La Plata, ditch between La Plata and Ensenada, flooded areas at Lisandro Olmos and Brandsen, Río Salado at Las Flores, ditches at Rosas and near Parish, Arroyo del Azul, Arroyo Videla between Azul and Chillar, Segundo Brazo de los Tres Arroyos under bridge, Río Sauce Chico near Bahía Blanca (Buenos Aires); irrigation ditches from Río Negro, ditches at Pomona Isla Choele Choel Grande (Río Negro); irrigation ditch from Río Limay at Neuquén, brook at Puesto La Tereza (Neuquén); ditch emptying into Arroyo Negro near San Carlos (Mendoza); Laguna Comedero (Salta); ditch at Montecarlo (Misiones). Morphology in Paraense (1966).

Biomphalaria straminea (Dunker, 1848) - Pond near Arroyo Riachuelo (Corrientes); Laguna La Guardia (Santa Fe); creek at Tigre, pond at Vicente López (Buenos Aires); dam on Río Tercero at Villa Rumipal (Córdoba). Morphology in Paraense and Deslandes (1955b) as Australorbis centimetralis.

Biomphalaria tenagophila (Orbigny, 1835) - Pond at Paso de los Libres, Arroyo Porá near Bonpland, marsh connected with Arroyo Castillo at Curuzú-Cuatiá, Río Santa Lucía at San Roque, swamp at Yacarey (Corrientes); pond at Posadas, Laguna Madanto (Misiones); swamps at Lapachito and Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña (Chaco); ponds at Las Lomitas, Apeadero Bruchard and Los Matacos, swamp near Tres Mojones (Formosa); Río Salado, near Santo Tomé, brook at Rosario (Santa Fe); grassy marsh near Federación, creek near San Salvador, grassy marshes near Pedernal and Raíces Oeste (Entre Ríos); Arroyo Calimayo, Arroyo Tala near Leocadio Paz (Tucumán); pond at Los Avalos (Jujuy); pond near Termas de Río Hondo, creek from a marsh to Río Dulce (Santiago del Estero). Morphology in Paraense and Deslandes (1955a) as Australorbis nigricans.

Genus Drepanotrema Crosse & Fischer, 1880

Drepanotrema anatinum (Orbigny, 1835) - Arroyo Porá near Bonpland, swamp at Yacarey (Corrientes); pond at Resistencia (Chaco); ponds at Las Lomitas, Apeadero Bruchard and Los Matacos, Laguna de los Índios, swamp at Puerto Vélaz (Formosa); Arroyos Yeruá and Ayui Grande, near Concordia (Entre Ríos); Laguna La Guardia, Laguna Los Espejos (Santa Fe). Morphology in Paraense and Deslandes (1956a).

Drepanotrema cimex (Moricand, 1837) - Laguna Mansa at Paso de Los Libres (Corrientes); pond at Resistencia (Chaco), ditch at Parque Nacional de Iguazú (Misiones); Laguna Los Espejos (Santa Fe); Arroyo Yeruá, near Concordia (Entre Rios). Morphology in Paraense and Deslandes (1958a).

Drepanotrema depressissimum (Moricand, 1837) - Pond near Paso de la Patria (Corrientes); swamps at Makallé and Lapachito, ponds at Resistencia and Pre-sidencia de La Plaza; swamp at Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña (Chaco); ponds at San Salvador de Jujuy (Jujuy); pond at Puesto La Mina, between Hickmann and Dragones, pond at Los Blancos (Salta); ponds at Ingeniero Juárez, Las Lomitas, Estanislao del Campo, Apeadero Bruchard, Los Chiriguanos, Los Matacos and San Hilário, Laguna de los Índios, flooded area at San Hilario (Formosa). Morphology in Paraense and Deslandes (1957).

Drepanotrema heloicum (Orbigny, 1835) - Grassy marsh near Raíces Oeste (Entre Ríos); marsh at Campana, ditch at Tronco Talar near San Fernando, marsh at Tigre, Arroyo Sarandi and ditch at San Isidro, ditches between La Plata and Ensenada, brook Carnaval at Villa Elisa, flooded areas at Lisandro Olmos and Brandsen, ditch at Rosas (Buenos Aires). Morphology in Paraense (1965).

Drepanotrema kermatoides (Orbigny, 1835) - Brook at Paso de los Libres, ditches at Corrientes (Corrientes); pond at Chajarí, grassy marsh near Federación, Arroyo Yeruá near Concordia; creek near San Salvador, grassy marsh near Raíces Oeste, ditch at Rosario del Tala (Entre Ríos); pond at Rosario (Santa Fe); pond near Vuelta de Obligado, marsh at Campana, ditch at Tronco Talar near San Fernando, pond at Pavón, Arroyo Sarandi at San Isidro, ditch at Quilmes, pond at Florencio Varela, Arroyo Carnaval at Villa Elisa, flooded areas at Lisandro Olmos, Brandsen, Partido General Paz, ditch at Las Flores, ditch at Rosas (Buenos Aires); irrigation ditch at Isla Choele Choel Grande (Río Negro); swamp near dam at Cruz del Eje (Córdoba); pond at Aquilares, swamp near Pozo del Alto, swamp near El Cadillal (Tucumán); bog near Palomitas (Salta). Drepanotrema lucidum (Pfeiffer, 1839) - Laguna Madanto at Santo Pipó (Misiones); pond at Paso de Los Libres, Arroyo Porá near Bonpland, Arroyo Pilincho at Monte Caseros, swamp at Yacarey, flooded area at San Luis del Palmar, pond near Paso de la Patria, ditches at Corrientes (Corrientes); ponds at Resistencia, ditch at Puerto Vilelas, swamp at Lapachito, pond at Presidencia de La Plaza, swamp at Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña (Chaco); Arroyo Yeruá near Concordia (Entre Ríos); Laguna La Guardia, Laguna Los Espejos (Santa Fe); Río de Los Blancos (Jujuy); pond at Los Blancos (Salta); ponds at Las Lomitas, Apeadero Bruchard and Los Matacos (Formosa). Morphology in Paraense and Deslandes (1956b) as D. melleum.

Genus Lymnaea Lamarck, 1799

Lymnaea columella Say, 1817 - Grassy marshes at Paso de Los Libres and Ituzaingó (Corrientes); grassy marsh between Federación and Concordia (Entre Ríos). Morphology in Paraense (1983).

Lymnaea viatrix Orbigny, 1835 - Arroyo del Antonico and ditch at Paraná, (Entre Ríos); irrigation ditches at Viedma, ditch at Choele-Choel Grande, Río Manso at Bariloche (Río Negro); marshes bordering road at Neuquén, flooded areas and saline brook near Zapala, between Arroyo Covunco and Río Agrio, and draining to Río Grande at Bardas Blancas, brook at Chos Malal, ditches at Puesto La Tereza and Piedra del Águila, left affluent of Río Manso Superior near Pampa Linda, brook at San Martín de Los Andes, marsh at Catán Lil (Neuquén); ditch emptying into Arroyo Negro near San Carlos, ditch at Mendoza (Mendoza); Arroyo Saltos Blancos (San Juan); pond at Córdoba, ditch at Salsacate (Córdoba); marshes at Comandante Luis Piedra Buena and Gobernador Gregores (Santa Cruz). Genus Physa Draparnaud, 1801

Physa acuta Draparnaud, 1805 - Senior synonym of Physa cubensis (see Paraense & Pointier, 2003) - Ditches at Corrientes (Corrientes); ditches at Mendoza, dam El Carrizal (Mendoza).

Physa marmorata Guilding, 1828 - Ponds at Resistencia (Chaco); ditch at Corrientes (Corrientes); marshes at Campana and Tigre; ditch between Ensenada and La Plata; pond at Vuelta de Obligado (Buenos Aires). Morphology in Paraense (1986b).
