Second Internet Conference On Salivarian Trypanosomes

Code Number:OC99036

FOREWORD

The Second Internet Conference on Salivarian Trypanosomes was held in the Tryplink-L discussion list from March 9 to 19, 1998. This is the second time we organize this kind of conference in order to involve researchers worldwide working on several aspects of trypanosomosis caused by salivarian trypanosomes. The 27 "lectures" presented during this virtual conference covered a wide variety of topics such as classical and molecular epidemiology/epizootiology, molecular biology, phylogeny and evolution, control measures, remote sensing, diagnosis and therapy. Presentations came from 13 countries and five continents showing the interest of international experts to participate.

These kind of meetings were organized thinking in the best way to discuss and exchange information concerning the trypanosomosis caused by salivarian trypanosomes. During the First Internet Conference (http://www.cenargen.embrapa.br/~davila/salivaria/vmeetings/fwmst.h tml) 15 "lectures" were presented, so we hope to improve these virtual conferences involving more researchers worldwide. In fact, funds to attend meetings/workshops are being restricted because of the current and global reduction of financial aid for research. Using the new fast ways of communications such as e-mail and Internet, we can get and put relevant information, and of course, discuss with our colleagues in other continents relevant aspects concerning diagnosis or control of diseases for example.

The virtual conferences on salivarian trypanosomes is one of the ways we are using to involve colleagues worldwide and exchange information in a dynamic and economic way. Among our ambitious undertaking is to encourage the participation of at the least one researcher from each country affected by salivarian trypanosomes. Databases containing informations on our discussion lists and a directory of experts are continuously being updated. Also, a technical newsletter Trypnews is being edited in Vene-zuela and the On-line version is currently under construction. Following these efforts to make available helpful information on the Web, we are improving the Salivaria home page (http://www./cenargen.embrapa.br/~davila/salivaria.html) and have projects to include detailed information concerning trypanosome disease and infection as well as data on diagnostic tools.

We look forward to meet you during the next virtual meeting, maybe using all the available Internet facilities. A netconference using videocameras would be an ideal form to discuss our ideas and results close to the XXI century.
