Indian Journal of Pharmacology, Vol. 36, No. 6, November-December, 2004, pp. 393 Obituary Prof. Asis Kumar Nag Chaudhury (07.07.1949 - 19.03.2004) Faculty & students Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Jadavpur University, Kolkata Code Number: ph04143 Prof. Asis Kumar Nag Chaudhury With great shock and grief, we record the sudden and untimely demise on March 19, 2004, of Prof. Asis Kumar Nag Chaudhury of the Division of Pharmacology, Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Prof. Nag Chaudhury was born on July 7, 1949. He obtained his M. Sc. (Physiology) degree in 1970 and Ph. D. degree (working under the supervision of the renowned Prof. S. C. Lahiri) of the University of Calcutta in 1977. Beginning his career as Lecturer in Pharmacology at the Jadavpur University in 1976, by dint of dedicated work, he steadily rose to become Professor in 1999. He was also nominated as the Director of the School of Natural Product Studies of the University. During his tenure, he guided more than 10 Ph. D. scholars and acted as dissertation guide for more than 30 M. Pharm. students. Over 60 papers in international and national journals bear testimony to his work and he was an active member of many scientific bodies, including the local chapter of the Indian Pharmacological Society. Prof. Nag Chaudhury visited Germany, England and Italy many times, presented papers and also chaired sessions in various national and international conferences. He successfully undertook multiple research projects sponsored by national bodies like the ICMR, UGC, CSIR, AICTE and NTRF.. As a person, Prof. Nag Chaudhury endeared himself to pharmacologists, pharmacists, and physiologists, not just in Kolkata but all over the country. He was ready to help all students and many outside his University sought his assistance and were never disappointed. Work consumed him to the last day. Indeed, just on the day before his demise, he attended an Organizing Committee meeting of the 37th Annual Conference of the Indian Pharmacological Society. His life is a rare example of courage, determination and dedication, which will inspire us all. He is survived by his wife and son and we stand by his family in their hour of grief.
