Obituary

Dr. Rwehumbiza Theophil Rwegoshora 1961-2006

Dr. Rwehumbiza Theophil Rwegoshora, Senior Research Scientist with the Tanzanian National Institute for Medical Research died in a car accident on 17th December 2006 at the age of 45 years. He met his death in Serengeti National Park, northern Tanzania while driving to Bukoba with his family for the Christmas vacation. The deceased who was born in Bukoba, Tanzania in January 1961, started out his carrier with the National Institute for Medical Research at Amani Research Centre on 17th July 1987. He graduated in BSc (Microbiology and Parasitology) from the University of Dar es Salaam in 1993 and later joined MSc in Environmental Biology programme at the Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand where he graduated in March 1998.

Dr. Rwegoshora joined the Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen for a PhD programme in 1998. He was awarded a doctorate degree in Medical Entomology in 2004. His thesis is titled “Wuchereria bancrofti in East Africa: patterns of transmission in two communities with different levels of endemicity”.

Dr. Rwegoshora was among the founders of the annual International Short Course titled”“Introduction to Mosquito Ecology and Control” which is been carried out at the Amani Research Centre of the National Institute for Medical Research in collaboration with American Biophysics Corporation (USA) and DBL-Institute of Health Research and Development, Denmark. Dr. Rwegoshora was also among the first scientists to take part in the initial studies on malaria control using insecticide impregnated mosquito nets in Africa.

Apart from research activities he was one of the few who lived with wide spectrum of interactions with people of different calibres while generously providing assistances (including valuable advices) to those in need. He was always fighting for the better working conditions among fellow workers and in between 2004 and 2005 was the Chairman of Researchers, Academicians, and Allied Workers Union of the then Ubwari Research Station of the Amani Medical Research Centre.

Dr. Rwegoshora has published over 20 scientific papers in peer reviewed journals on malaria, lymphatic filariasis and Densovirus.
