Introduction: The cryptosporidiosis is frequent in children with a compromised immune system.
Objective:To determine the rate of presence for
Cryptosporidium
spp in feces through Ziehl-Neelsen modified (mZN) on children with and without cancer <13 years old from the Hospital Universitario «Ramón Gonzalez Valencia» in Bucaramanga, Colombia.
Materials and methods: Descriptive and observational study during 9 months. Group I = children with cancer, age 7 years 2 months ± 2 years 9 months, 62 girls, 44 with acute lymphocytic leukemia, 37 chronic malnourished (CMN), 36 with abdominal pain, 80 of urban origin, 29 in stacking, 27 without potable water, 25 without excreta disposition, 54 with pets at home, 59 attending nursery schools, 40 in treatment, 24 with diarrhea. Group II = 90 children without cancer, age 5 years 5 months ± 2 years 9 months, 58 boys, 32 CMN, 15 with abdominal pain, 35 of urban origin, 34 in stacking, 37 without potable water, 19 without excreta disposition, 66 with pets at home, 49 attending nursery schools, 19 with diarrhea. The statistical analysis was done through Student's t test, χ
2 and Fischer's test, having p<0.05 as significant.
Results: In the group I, 45 children (40.9%) showed >5 oocysts of Cryptosporidium spp in feces through mZN and in the group II, 36 children (40%) did. When compared, there were no significant differences as for age, gender, symptoms, origin, sanitary conditions, diagnosis, management and presence of diarrhea (p>0.05).
Conclusion: The rate of presence of Cryptosporidium spp through mZN in children <13 years old with and without cancer was 1.02, with no association at all, being high in this environment for both groups.
