TWAS-UNESCO ASSOCIATESHIP SCHEME AT CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE IN THE SOUTH

Code Number: tc06045

In cooperation with UNESCO, TWAS instituted a joint Associateship Scheme in 1994 in collaboration with several Centres of Excellence in the South to enable active researchers from the South to visit these centres regularly. Currently over one hundred centres are participating in this scheme. The Drug Research and Production Unit, Faculty of Pharmacy, ObafemiAwolowoUniversity, Ile-Ife is one of the Centres.

The aim of the scheme is to counteract the brain drain by alleviating the problem of isolation of talented scientists in developing countries, and strengthen the research programmes of Centres of Excellence in the South.

Within this scheme, a number of associates will be selected for each of the collaborating Centres from among the most eminent and promising researchers in developing countries, working in the fields of interest of each centre. The selection will be highly competitive and the appointment will be made on the basis of merit. Special consideration will be given to scientists from isolated institutions in developing countries.

The appointment will be made for a fixed period of three years, during which the associate is entitled to visit the Centre twice for a period of two to three months each time. Subject to the availability of funds, the appointment may berenewed for a further term of three years. During the visit the associate maypursue his/her own research interests and/or collaborate with the research teamsat the Centre in programmes of common interest. The associateship will cover travel and provide a small contribution of US$300.00 per month towardsincidental local expenses. The host centre will cover accommodation and food and provide all the necessary research facilities.

The scheme is supported by a grant provided by UNESCO and the Dipartimento per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and funds from the OPEC Fund for International Development.
