O Gon and G.R. Allen
Abstract
A new species of cardinalfish, Apogon
photogaster is described based on 11 specimens from Madang
Lagoon in Papua New Guinea and Galoc Island in the Philippines.
This new species has 15 pectoral rays, 2 predorsal scales, 15-18
gill-rakers (8-9 developed), and 7 gill-rakers on the
ceratobranchial of the first gill-arch. It has a unique
bioluminescent system, including a light organ branching forward
from the second loop of the intestine and a diffuser organ along
the ventrolateral part of the body.
