Cardozo, A.E.; Herrera, J.; Leáñez, L.E.; Marcano, J.E.; Fuenmayor, R. & De Abreu, J.M.

Abstract

From 60 to 70% of G.I.S.T are located in the stomach, they represents about 5% of all gastric malignancies. Preoperative histologic diagnosis by endoscopic procedures is uncommon. Surgical treatment is considered the gold standard in these cases, with an overall 5 year survival of 50%, without metastasic disease, 20 months with it and 9 to 12 months when locally recurrent disease its present. The response observed with the use of Imatinib in patients with metastasic disease or not sensitive to surgical treatment can reach 50% with a few months of therapy.

Cardozo, A.E.; Herrera, J.; Leáñez, L.E.; Marcano, J.E.; Fuenmayor, R. & De Abreu, J.M.
