Abstract

The perinatal mortality of kid goats is an important cause of looses, which sometimes reached up 50%, in extensive managed farms. In this present work we study the main causes of lost in the perinatal stage of the kid goats. The work was conducted at the Agronomy and Zootechnical College (UNT) situated in foothill agroecological region of Tucumán Province (Argentina) under subtropical wet climate with an average precipitation of 1000 mm annually, average minimum temperature of 12° C (Jl) and a maximum of 24° C (J). We worked with a flock of Criolla goats recording data of births (92), the number of perinatal death and its causes. The number of death arose to fourteen due to thyroid hypertrophy, low bodyweight at birth and no diagnosis. The hypertrophy thyroid (goitre) was the main cause of death. It is concluded that the Criolla kid goat Serrano, has a good viability when adequate practices of management are observed.
