Effect of supplementing fishmeal on the onset of puberty in holstein heifers Néstor E. Obispo, Mireya López y Julio Garmendia Abstract To evaluate the effect of feeding bypass protein (BP) on some reproductive parameters, twenty-seven heifers Holstein were allotted, in a complete randomized design, to three diets containing three levels of fishmeal (0, 250 and 500 g). From the results it comes out that the reproductive activity, reflected on the ovaries characteristics, did not show variations that could be related with the diet, and on the onset of the puberty. Independently of the weight, a decrease (P<0.07) of 50 d was observed at the age at puberty in those animals fed supplementary quantity of BP. A shorter (P <0.05) age at the first service (61 d) was observed in those heifers that received BP. It was conclude that feeding fishmeal to prepubertal heifers, as a source of BP promotes favorable changes to reach an earlier reproductive activity. Efecto de la suplementación con harina de pescado sobre la aparición de la pubertad en novillas Holstein Néstor E. Obispo, Mireya López y Julio Garmendia Resumen Para evaluar el efecto de ofrecer proteínas sobrepasantes (PS) sobre algunos parámetros reproductivos en animales prepuberes, veintisiete novillas Holstein fueron asignadas en un diseño completamente aleatorizado a tres tratamientos experimentales de suplementación con tres niveles diarios de harina de pescado (0, 250 y 500 g). De los resultados se deriva que la actividad reproductiva, reflejada en las características de los ovarios no mostró evidencias que pudieran relacionarse con la dieta y la aparición de la pubertad en estas novillas. Se observó una disminución (P<0,07) de la edad de aparición de la pubertad (50 días) en aquellos animales que recibieron más cantidad de PS, independientemente del peso de los mismos. Se logró disminuir (P<0,05) la edad al primer servicio en 61 días en aquellas novillas que recibieron la suplementación con PS. Se concluye que el uso de la harina de pescado, como fuente de PS, en la alimentación de novillas promueve cambios favorables para alcanzar una actividad reproductiva más temprana.
