TECHNICAL NOTE - Use of an intravaginal device for the control of estrus in mares Oscar R. Wilde, Adolfo C. de la Vega y María L. Cruz Abstract An intravaginal device for bovine use (PRID), containing progesterone of slow releasing, was evaluated in eleven Peruvian mares for oestrus synchronization. The device was installed just as presented commercially for bovine use and stayed in situ for twelve days, then it was retired without much difficulties. Manifestations of heat were observed 24 h after withdraw the PRID, with the highest incidence (50%) at 74 h. Nine mares that showed a totally normal heat were inseminated, resulted pregnant. One mare was anestric and was served for natural way, another showed an excessively long heat not being able to be inseminated. NOTA TÉCNICA - Uso de un dispositivo intravaginal para el control del estro en yeguas Oscar R. Wilde, Adolfo C. de la Vega y María L. Cruz Resumen Un dispositivo intravaginal de uso bovino (PRID) conteniendo progesterona de lenta liberación, fue evaluado en once yeguas de la raza Peruano de Paso con el fin de sincronizar sus celos. El dispositivo fue instalado tal como es presentado comercialmente para bovinos y se mantuvo in situ por un lapso de doce días, al cabo de los cuales fue retirado sin mayores complicaciones. Manifestaciones de celo fueron observadas a las 24 h después del retiro del PRID, con su más alta incidencia (50%) a las 74 h. Nueve yeguas que mostraron un celo completamente normal fueron inseminadas quedando preñadas. Una yegua resultó anéstrica siendo luego servida por monta natural y otra mostró un celo excesivamente largo no pudiendo ser inseminada.
