en Antimicrobial activity of propolis from two climatic zones in Miranda state, Venezuela. Seasonal variation effect
Antonio J. Manrique

Abstract

Propolis samples were collected from apiaries at two locations in Miranda state, Venezuela, located in different life zones. The first location is at a humid premountain forest in Guaicaipuro Municipality and the second is at a dry tropical forest in Guatire, Zamora Municipality, from October 2001 to September 2002. This assay was carried out to evaluate the seasonal influence and the antibacterial activity by the propolis collected in both life zones. The data were analyzed through a mixed model based on repeated measures in each location and means separated by the Tukey test. All ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEP) showed antimicrobial activity inhibiting growth of Staphylococcus aureus check for this species in other resources ATCC 25.923, with an inhibition halo up to 30 mm, and Micrococcus luteus check for this species in other resources ATCC 9.341. EEP samples collected from Guatire in January and from El Laurel in January and July exhibited the highest antibacterial activity. The results suggest that the studied propolis showed seasonal influence in the inhibition of bacterial growth and that EEP could be used as antimicrobial agents against S. aureus and M. luteus.
