Syzygium cumini
L. é uma árvore nativa da Índia conhecida popularmente por jambolão, bastante
cultivada como espécie ornamental, apresenta propriedades medicinais e seus frutos são comestíveis,
no entanto, os estudos sobre a conservação das sementes são incipientes. O objetivo dessa pesquisa foi
avaliar a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de
Syzygium cumini durante o armazenamento. O trabalho foi
conduzido no laboratório de análise de sementes em ambiente protegido do Centro de Ciências Agrárias
(CCA) da Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB), campus II, em Areia - PB. Os frutos foram despolpados
e as sementes foram acondicionadas em sacos plásticos duplos contendo substratos umedecidos: areia,
vermiculita e areia+vermiculita (proporção 1:1), cada um com 10 e 20% de umidade e armazenados em
câmara seca (19±5ºC e 74±20% UR) durante 30 dias. A cada seis dias, as sementes foram retiradas para a
determinação do teor de água e realização dos testes de emergência, índice de velocidade de emergência,
comprimento e massa seca de plântulas. As melhores condições para a preservação da qualidade
fisiológica das sementes de jambolão são obtidas quando acondicionadas nos substratos (vermiculita e/
ou areia+vermiculita) umedecidos, mantendo-as viáveis durante 30 dias. E o substrato vermiculita+areia
umedecido a 10% destaca-se por melhor preservar as características fisiológicas.
